Course Overview

Technologies

This course delivers a thorough & foundational introduction to programming and usage of the main building problems of three popular languages - Python, Java, and C# - to create modern desktop and web applications.

The course will cover everything from thinking like a programmer, to practical usage of common software development tools and resources, to key concepts such as data & control structures, usage patterns, control flow, and object orientated programming.

You should exit this course as a confident programmer in the three languages above, understand conceptual programming concepts, and be able to easily pick up more languages (such as C++, Javascript etc). You’ll understand how to translate ideas into code in a logical and efficient manner.

Course syllabus

Our courses are designed to help you learn programming skills through practice. Here are the practical projects you'll complete with the help of a mentor as part of this course:

1

Your First Computer Program

Up to now, the idea of creating your own computer program may have seemed daunting. Once you've said "Hello, world!" with your first program though, you'll wonder why you were worried.

2

You're in Control

Learn about control structures, the building blocks of any computer program, and develop code that will read from files on your computer, and even output to brand new ones.

3

Become Object-Oriented

Object Oriented Programming, or OOP, is a paradigm that'll help you understand programming more concretely. You'll discover how classes are blueprints for objects, which have attributes, and why these terms are analogous to, say, a red BMW. Once you're thinking in OOP, your programs will practically structure themselves.

4

Learn What's Popular

You'll develop proficiency in the three most popular languages currently used in industry: Python, Java and C sharp.

5

Personalise your Functions

Dive into more advanced topics covering function overloading - a way to personalise a function from a generic definition - as well as 2D arrays, #ing and enumerators, all useful concepts in more complex software projects.

6

Course Structure

This MicroDegree is broken up into three significant sections, each consisting of a number of Tasks. Each Task is a self-contained component of the course that focusses in on one aspect of learning. Each Task contains a number of optional exercises, a compulsoryexercise, example code, video material, and reading materials in PDF format.

Why Take This Course?

This MicroDegree offers the introductory platform to programming offered by the Introduction to Programming course, but focuses on more advanced concepts and topics. If you’ve got basic programming skills and are ready to take a step further into more advanced concepts such as best practices for object-oriented programming, a deeper dive into data structures, and advanced IDE topics, this MicroDegree will allow you to flex your software development muscles.

You’ll progress through the content to build proficiency in the concepts you need to begin to develop software at a more professional level. Up to 80% of all current software development jobs in the South African and international markets require at least either Python, Java or C#. As a programmer working in the 21st century, you are almost guaranteed to have to use one of these languages at some point in your career - if not from day one.  There’s no doubt you’ll be in demand with this starting language package.  Just try out a search on our Careers website for one of these languages to get a feel for the jobs out there.

1-on-1 mentor support for the duration of your course support, including live chat and code marking within 6 hours of assignment submission

Access to all course content , including hundreds of programming exercises and explanatory documents

Verified certificate on course completion, including post-course career support
A MicroDegree is a innovative new concept which goes beyond simply taking an online course. This certification is designed to get you the skills that employers believe are integral to get a job in software development. It focuses on learning by doing, and is typically comprised of 8 to 15 practical programming projects with hundreds of additional programming exercises and course content to support the skills needed to complete these projects.

All our MicroDegrees connect you with a 1:1 mentor, to which your practical programming projects are submitted for feedback. Your mentor works with you in real time to improve your code, solve programming exercises, and craft your learning path to match your intended career. Mentor support is available 24/7 online with face-to-face support offered in selected areas.
