Coding is currently one of the most in-demand skills in South Africa, and Johannesburg is no exception.
Gauteng is home to 55% of South Africa’s tech start-ups, many of which are in need of coders with cutting-edge knowledge and skills. Johannesburg is also home to several large financial institutions, which are continuously updating the way they do business - especially where cyber security is concerned.
Communications and media also play a big role in Joburg’s economy, and this is another industry that’s always looking to innovate and become more digitally focused.
Simply put, there are many exciting employment opportunities for coders living in Johannesburg - you just need the right qualification to help you shine. Learn Software Engineering or Web Development at our on-site Johannesburg campus.
Recruitment company OfferZen recently revealed some insights into developer salaries in Johannesburg. Entry level salaries in Joburg start at approximately R22,000 a month - working out to an average of R264,000 a year.

Our latest Graduate Outcomes Report showed some really positive results, demonstrating how many of our graduates go on to successful new careers after completing a coding bootcamp. While we don’t place our graduates in jobs directly, we do offer post-course support, which includes building a technical CV, preparing for interviews and introducing graduates to our hiring partners. This helps to ensure that a high number of our graduates find employment in a career they are passionate about.
95% of our graduates have reached their career outcomes since graduation.
61% of graduates switched to a career in tech. 72% of these graduates switched careers within 3 months of graduating.
Graduates in South Africa increased their post-course salaries by an average of R12,000 per month.
Wilbert has previously worked as a lecturer, analyst and data specialist. He was drawn to the world of data science, but realised that he wasn’t marketable enough to apply for data science roles, due to a lack of Python skills. That’s when he turned to HyperionDev.
Wilbert says: “I realised that the new sexy job in the world is data scientist and machine learning engineer. Coupled with my current educational qualifications, being a data scientist was a noble idea, so I was excited to see where HyperionDev could take me.
Within months of completing my HyperionDev course, I had landed a job at EOH in data science, earning over 40% more monthly than what I was earning before I took the course. The course prepared me incredibly well for this role with EOH; the course’s practical projects in Python improved my set of tech skills, making me marketable to any company as a data scientist.”
Aifheli has always been fascinated by computer technology, which prompted him to study software development with HyperionDev. After studying Java, C# and Python for 3 months, he accepted a position as Java Software Developer at FNB, one of South Africa’s biggest banks.
Aifheli tells his story: “I was an unemployed National IT Diploma graduate from Tshwane University of Technology in 2016. I then became part of the Johannesburg cohort on the HyperionDev & CiTi Software Development Training program, where I was enrolled in the Certified Software Developer Micro Degree, studying Java, C# and Python for 3 months. Afterwards, I was then recruited into the FNB IT department as a Java Software Developer.
HyperionDev is a very professional organisation that knows how to train students in the necessary languages, frameworks and technologies that are needed to properly prepare them for a career in tech.”
These are just two of the many exciting success stories from our students who decided to learn to code Johannesburg.
