It’s clear that IT training helps South Africans to earn well in Rands, while working in their home country. But what about those looking for overseas opportunities:
The United States became the third most popular destination for South Africans between 2006 and 2016, according to StatsSA. IT and computer professionals are designated as “speciality occupations”, which are eligible to receive a US visa.
The United Kingdom is a popular destination for South Africans. It’s also a country where many businesses are short of employees in key sectors, such as IT. On top of this, UK unemployment is at a historic 42-year low of 4.3%, and Brexit has led to a fall in net migration.
Those emigrating from South Africa will find some excellent career prospects with certain in-demand skills. The UK Shortage Occupation List includes IT and communication professionals, programmers and software development professionals. People with these qualifications will find it easier to secure a job in the UK and get the relevant work permit.
A large number of South Africans are also heading Down Under. What’s in store for those with IT qualifications?
Although the Skilled Occupation list for Australia has been cut shorter, there are still more than 400 occupations that are in high demand. These include web developers, software engineers, and software and applications programmers.
New Zealand distinguishes their skills shortages between long-term and immediate shortages. A long-term skills shortage includes both international and local shortages in an occupation. Junior software engineers and web developers are both on the long-term skill shortage list for New Zealand.
